Warriors fail to get the #1 pick in the draft lottery, the Nets slide all the way to #3 even though they had one of the worst seasons in NBA history and the Wizards luck into the top spot after a season from hell in which their franchise player decided to bring a gun-shop to the locker room. With all that said, let’s take a look at what each team in the top 6 might do on draft night.
1. Washington Wizards- John Wall (PG) Kentucky
Not much to say other than John Wall is going to be a superstar in the NBA from day one and gives the Wizards options as they move forward. They can pair him with Gilbert Arenas to have the most explosive back-court in the league or it can finally allow the Wizards to trade Arenas and completely move on from last season.
2. Philadelphia 76ers- DeMarcus Cousins (C) Kentucky
The most unpredictable player in the draft heads to Philly as Cousins’ upside is too much to pass on for new 76ers Head Coach Doug Collins. Most draft pundits have Evan Turner going to the 76ers but I think they take Cousins to solidify their front-line. The question marks surrounding Cousins will linger but you can’t pass on a potential All-Star big man.
3. New Jersey Nets- Derrick Favors (SG) Ohio State
Adding Favors to play alongside Brook Lopez gives the Nets a potentially dominant front-court for the next 10 years. Favors is the best PF prospect in the draft as he’s still a bit raw but will develop quickly playing alongside Lopez.
4. Minnesota Timberwolves- Wesley Johnson-(SF) Syracuse
Even though the Timberwolves would love to take another PG, they’ll have to settle for the best NBA ready wing player in the draft. Johnson gives the Wolves some much needed athleticism along with someone who can run the floor and block some shots. Johnson has to improve his jump-shot to be a consistent scorer but everything else in his game is NBA ready from jump.
5. Sacramento Kings- Evan Turner (SG) Ohio State
Turner falls to the Kings to join last season’s Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans in giving Kings fan another reason to bring their cowbells to the game. Turner is not the most athletically gifted player but he’s gotten a proven track record and accumulated numerous awards during his time at Ohio State. Turner needs to work on his range as he shot an abysmal percentage from long distance in college and struggled with his shot throughout the year.
6. Golden State Warriors- Al-Farouq Aminu (SF) Wake Forest
The Warriors can go in a variety of directions at pick #6 as they have multiple needs. In the end, Nellie takes an athletic small forward to bring some explosiveness and defense to the roster. The Warriors have no Small Forward on the team and bringing in Aminu gives them the ability to play a small back-court as Aminu-Randolph-Biedrins give them a long and athletic front-line.
