That’s 69 wins for Steve Kerr if you combine the regular season with these first two playoff wins, which is remarkable. No rookie coach has won more games in the history of the league, but that still was not good enough to win the Coach of the Year Award. According to Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today Sports, Mike Budenholzer of the Atlanta Hawks was named NBA Coach of the Year:
Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer was named NBA coach of the year for the 2014-15 season, the league announced Tuesday morning.
Budenholzer finished with 513 points, edging Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr by 42 points. Budenholzer received 67 first-place votes, 58 second-place votes and four third-place votes and Kerr had 56, 61 and eight for 471 points.
Budenholzer received 513 points, but Kerr was not too far behind. Kerr had 471 points, only 42 behind Budenholzer, so this was a very close race. Many believed Kerr was the favorite to win this award, but voters went with the surprise of the year, the Atlanta Hawks.
Kerr led the league with 67 wins, but has been criticized for taking over a team that was already a playoff contender, which is unfair considering how much the team has improved in one season. Nobody expected the Hawks to be the number one seed in the East, so Budenholzer gets all the credit and deservingly so, but Kerr’s case was strong.
There is still other awards to be delivered, it will be shocking if the Warriors don’t come away with a couple of them.
