On Adding Ben Gordon to the Training Camp Roster
In his 11-year career, Ben Gordon has been an energetic scorer and proven shooter. A one-time 6th Man of the Year award winner, Gordon used to throw defenses off guard.
Gordon has career averages of 14.9 points per game and 40% shooting from beyond the arc.
He doesn’t get to the free-throw line as much as the Warriors would like a guard to, but can still make a jumper.
“Well he’s a proven scorer, a proven shooter, and he’s at an age where he should still be able to play. Physically, he looks good so we’ll give him a chance,” -Steve Kerr on Gordon.
“He’s a proven vet, he’s going to come to camp and we’ll see what happens. We have one roster spot and we’ll keep that open and we’ll have the guys come in and compete for it,” -Bob Myers on Gordon
While both the head coach and GM understand that Gordon is well known around the league for his talent, he will have to beat out a few hungry, younger players if he wants to officially make the roster and earn that last spot.
Last season, Gordon scored 6.2 points per game in 56 contests with the Orlando Magic.
On Steve Nash joining as a Part-Time Player Developmental Consultant
One of the biggest splashes the Warriors made in the offseason was the addition of Steve Nash to their coaching staff.
“From my capacity, I see him as an asset to the organization in whatever way we choose to utilize him,” -Myers on Steve Nash
Steve Kerr said that Nash can help Steph Curry, but can help others along the way as well including Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes.
Nash is a two-time MVP and one of the best point guards the league has ever seen. Steve squared on the sideline can pose a threat to opposing teams. The loss of Alvin Gentry hurts, but a progressed Luke Walton and Nash on the staff can help fill the void.
Myers made an interesting statement during the media session. He claimed that he will never kick Nash out of practice if he wants to be there and he’ll let him help the team as much as he wants.
I couldn’t help but think of Mark Jackson when he made the comment. Jackson was notorious for kicking out or not letting legendary figures into practice, including Jim Barnett and Jerry West.
On Harrison Barnes contract talks
Harrison Barnes reportedly turned down a four year, $64-million contract extension. He also got rid of his old agent and hired Jeff Schwartz. The North Carolina product understands the new TV deal is kicking in soon and wants to make as much money as other guys in the league. Everyone seems to be trying to get every dollar they can out of teams.
If anyone knows how to manage money and build a championship caliber team, it’s Bob Myers.
“I think our history for extensions is to let it linger and see what happens in the end so we will. We’ll work hard and see what happens,” Myers said. “It has to work for us, it has to work for him. Tune in Oct 28-31 and we’ll have an answer for you.”
Festus Ezeli had an impressive postseason and is also due for an extension as his rookie contract is coming to an end.
“We’ll work on it. We’ll see if we can get something done. I don’t know if we will or won’t but we’ll work towards it and see if it makes for him and us. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t but we’ll make an attempt.” –Myers on Ezeli.
The backup center had a better NBA Finals performance than the starter, Andrew Bogut and is considered the Dubs center of the future if he can remain healthy.
Myers has made it clear he wants to keep the core together but if one player (Barnes) wants that much more than the rest and he isn’t even considered a top three option offensively, I’m not sure how if the extension will happen.
Steve Kerr on back surgeries
“Well to be honest, the last couple of months have stunk for me. I’m not kidding,” Kerr said, “I had a rough go physically this summer with two back surgeries and it has not be fun. It wasn’t the summer that I was envisioning after winning a title.”
That’s how Kerr responded when asked how his offseason went. You didn’t expect that coming from the first rookie head coach to win a title since Pat Riley did but two back surgeries and complications can definitely make it awful.
Kerr won’t pull a Phil Jackson, but he will take a back seat during training camp and let the assistants have more duties than usual.
Kerr on team remaining hungry
With all the “luck” and “asterisk” talk about the Warriors title, it’s safe to assume that they will be hungry heading into the season.
Kerr believes the key to the team’s improvement this year is continuity.
“To me, the great thing is we are starting from so much further on than last year. We were literally starting from scratch last year, Kerr said. “We’re starting from a position of great confidence, winning the title, continuity of the roster coming back, familiarity with the offense and an understanding that we can actually get better.”
As a multiple time NBA Champion, the sophomore coach understands how to repeat as back-to-back winners.
“You have to be wary of feeling to happy, feeling there’s nothing left to accomplish which obviously isn’t the case,” Kerr said.
Andrew Bogut, Brandon Rush updates
Despite Andrew Bogut having the longest season of his career (regular season, playoffs, Summer basketball), Kerr says that it won’t change how he uses him on the court.
“No minute restriction for Bogs, generally last season he averaged 25-26 minutes. I’d like to play him more. I don’t worry about minute restrictions with him,” Kerr said.
I heard the reports of Brandon Rush working hard and trying to get in basketball shape. I didn’t believe it until I saw it first hand. Rush was drenched in sweat, working hard with two trainers on the court.
Rush didn’t have the confidence to play last season after going through multiple knee injuries. However, with all his recent perseverance, Kerr has some good news on the
“Brandon’s going to get a chance to play and a shot at the back-up two role,” Kerr said.
Rush played in only 33 contests last season, mainly when the games were out of reach. The Warriors are expecting him to have a much better season and a potential crack into the rotation.
Glad to see that Myers seems to know how to deal with Barnes negotiations, I am confident that he will make the right call. i think that Barnes is asking for too much especially for an unproven inconsistent young player. Make him show big numbers before you give him big numbers!
