After two blowouts against the Kings and Lakers, the Warriors were tested in Portland. Although they were trailing with 25 seconds to go, Kerr’s composer kept the Warriors spirits high as Thompson would hit the game winning runner. Next up was their division rivals, the Clippers. The Warriors’ offensive fire power proved too much to be handled and they ran away with the game after the first half. After only four games, the Warriors look like they’ve bought into Kerr’s offensive mentality of ball movement, big men passing, and up-tempo pace.
On top of buying into the system, the Warriors roster genuinely seems to like one another. Starting with the “Splash Brothers”, both players came from smaller basketball programs. Unlike the Duke, UNC, and Kentucky, the Warriors selected Curry from little-known Davidson College and Thompson from Washington State University. Today, they’re the strongest case for the NBA’s best backcourt duo. Before Thompson’s huge payday (4 year extension worth nearly $69 million), players like Andre Iguodala knew Thompson deserved it. Diamond Leung of the Bay Area News Group spoke with Iggy on contracts:
Andre Iguodala said it last season. He said it during the offseason. And he’s said it this preseason that he wants to help his friend and Warriors teammate, Klay Thompson, get paid at a time when he’s due for a contract extension.
“Hopefully he’ll continue to realize I should get like 0.1 percent (of his next contract) or something like that,” Iguodala joked earlier this week.
“I would do that for any teammate,” the 30-year-old Iguodala told Sirius XM earlier this week. “And I would want it – a teammate like that, a guy to say, ‘Hey, this guy has our back and he wants me to get paid. He’s going to help me in any way possible.’“It’s not just Klay, but I want Steph (Curry) to maximize his career. I want him to get paid as much as possible on and off the court. Draymond Green’s in a contract year, too, so I’m going to be looking to give him a couple extra. He’s going to fill up the basket a little bit more with me on the court with him as well.
“It’s just about taking care of your teammates, and I learned that early on playing with (Philadelphia 76ers teammates) like Kevin Ollie, playing with guys like Aaron McKie. And then Andre Miller, he was perfect for me. He was a big reason why I got the (six-year, $80 million) deal that I got and why I played at the level I played with when I was in Philly.”
Although Iguodala has been moved to the bench, he leads his fellow forwards between Harrison Barnes, and Green; they have played well in their supporting roles. In a league where the bench and support is as important as the starters, their depth will be key in a championship run.
Then there’s the big men in Andrew Bogut and David Lee. It’s been very unfortunate that Lee has missed so much time on the floor and aggravating his hamstring in his return game. With Bogut healthy, the Warriors have a dependable rim protector and rebounder. His ability to make passes in the paint opens scoring opportunities for his teammates. In Kerr’s high paced offense, Bogut has led the fast breaks and has looked quite comfortable.
They Warriors seemingly have the idea that the season needs to end with another Bay Area championship. Making the playoffs are no longer good enough since this team has the tools to win it all. As long as Golden State is producing wins, the fans, the players, and the front office will remain happy.
