The Golden State Warriors are quickly becoming one of the best teams in the NBA. Their young group of core players are all primed to keep improving and continue building chemistry. Steve Kerr was brought in to get this team over the hump and he is expected to at least have the Warriors in contention for an NBA title for years to come.
Klay Thompson is one young star that could be an instrumental piece in a chase for a championship, but he must sign an extension and remain a Warrior. In an interview with Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle, Thompson admits he is excited about the Warriors’ future and hopes he could remain in Golden State:
First off, it’d be a dream come true if I was able to sign an extension. Whether it happens or not, I know I’m a fortunate man to be in the NBA. I’m going to leave that up to (agent) Bill Duffy and (general manager) Bob (Myers) and the rest of the Warriors’ front office. They’ll work it out. You hope for the best and prepare for the worst, but I’m excited about the Warriors’ franchise. I think we’re becoming one of the premier franchises in the NBA. It’s awesome to be part of it.
If the Warriors are able to remain healthy, the sky is the limit for them. The Warriors front office has been very aggressive, showing real commitment to bringing an NBA championship back to Golden State. Thompson understands he is playing for a great franchise who will be competing for the Larry O’Brien trophy on a consistent basis.
Warriors owner Joe Lacob has publicly said that he wants to re-sign Thompson, which gives the 24 year old some peace of mind. However, Thompson name has been swirling in rumors since the Warriors were eliminated from the playoffs. The Warriors are one of the teams interested in Kevin Love and Thompson could be a potential piece in that trade.
Thompson wants to remain a Warrior and more importantly he is very much aware of the opportunity the Warriors will have for the next several years. The Warriors could be playing in June pretty soon and it just would not be the same without one half of the splash brothers.
