Draymond Green Could Land A Spot On Team USA’s Final Roster

Steph Curry and Klay Thompson were amongst the 19 players selected to attend the USA Basketball training camp and battle for a spot on the final roster that will be headed to Spain for the FIBA World Cup of Basketball in late August. Both Curry and Thompson can shoot the lights out, which increases their chances of making the team, but Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski have a wide variety of options to choose from at the guard position.

While Team USA is loaded in the backcourt, both Blake Griffin and LaMarcus Aldridge have decided not to participate in this summer’s World Cup of Basketball. Without Griffin and Aldridge, team USA has some holes in the front court and will have to look elsewhere to fill them. According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, the lack of depth at the power forward position could make Draymond Green a viable option for Team USA:

The absence of Aldridge and Griffin, Colangelo said, meant he’ll now be on the lookout for young big men looking to take advantage of the opportunity. The lone remaining power forwards who are expected to participate from the Team USA roster are Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans), Kenneth Faried (Denver Nuggets), and Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves). There are also talented forwards on the Select team that will compete against Team USA in Las Vegas, including Mason Plumlee (Brooklyn Nets), Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors), rookie Doug McDermott (Chicago Bulls) and Tobias Harris (Orlando Magic).

Green was selected to the USA Select team that participates in the training camp with the national team hopefuls, but making the final roster seemed nearly impossible. With Griffin and Aldridge out of the picture, all of the big men on the select team have an opportunity to show why they belong on the final roster. While it is a long shot, it’s a privilege to represent your country and Green will surely recognize the opportunity at hand.

Green could fit in very well with any team, especially a team of NBA All-Stars. Green does not need the ball in his hands to make a difference and is very effective on the defensive end. His energy is contagious and is able to control the boards on both ends of the court. In a team full of egos, Green could be just what the Americans need to win a gold medal and guarantee themselves a spot in the 2016 Olympics.
