The Golden State Warriors took one of the best up-and-coming teams in the NBA, with two once-in-a-generation talents, another budding one in the overall first pick, and dropped Kevon Looney impact minutes on them. Steve Kerr’s squad has officially reached disrespect levels of the regular season. These moments in the past are reserved for guys like Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, turning their backs before the shots go in and flexing on other teams. Those acts get old. The new fun is just how the Warriors can completely and utterly detonate on a team with just about anyone on the roster. On Saturday night, you get Kevon Looney’s 3 blocks and 15 minutes of pure, unadulterated fun during the patented 3rd quarter avalanches.
Stephen Curry didn’t play another 4th quarter. He’s on pace to not play almost half the game’s most important quarter because he’s leading them to such a ridiculous lead in 3. And keep in mind that the Warriors were up just 1 at halftime. It started with the length and shooting combined with the Warriors’ usual dgaf attitude about turnovers that kept it close.
But outside of Looney and the usual Curry praise, let’s take a second in this 6-game win streak to appreciate just how great Kevin Durant has been all season. Somewhat under-the-radar at this point in his career, at least on the court, he is shooting well above 50-40-90 from the field and completely destroying guys at the rim.
Draymond Green is the team’s energy and defense on any given night, from games against the Phoenix Suns on a December night and Game 7 against LeBron James in the NBA Finals. Klay Thompson is the shooter and defender that’s consistent in what he brings every night. Stephen Curry is the team’s most important player, striking fear and unleashing runs that would make any team in NBA history succumb to its will. Kevin Durant’s role is becoming the most consistent excellent all-around player the team has ever seen. He’s a sublime scorer from all phases of the floor, a sneaky great passer, an unreal defender, and an overall unstoppable force that essentially keeps the team’s floor so good that it’s probably the best team in the NBA even of an off night.
Leftover Observations:
1. There were several “Warriors” chants in the first half that you don’t hear often nowadays. More early nighttime weekend games, NBA.
2. So that’s why Durant took that pay cut, huh? Nick Young is trying on defense and sometimes just being frenetic on defense is enough. The 3s are automatic. And he’s even passing? Just another player to throw at teams. Disrespectful amounts of shooting.
3. The best centers of this season, ranked: David West, Kevin Looney, Jordan Bell, JaVale McGee, and Zaza.
4. Klay’s shooting, and especially his shot coming off pindowns this season has been spectacular. Like Durant, he’s gunning for a 50/40/90 and if he can draw more fouls, there’s a chance…
5. Steph Better.
