There comes a point where mental rest and physical rest can be blended together in order to create a worthwhile pause in the action for a player who appears to be getting somewhat worn down. In the case of Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, that rest might be coming soon.
Over the last two games, the reigning Most Valuable Player has totaled just 33 points on 10-of-35 shooting from the floor, including a woeful 3-of-21 from beyond the arc. He almost has as many turnovers (7) as made field goals (10). And that’s an issue. It’s become so glaring that head coach Steve Kerr has started to take notice of it.
From Monte Poole of CSN Bay Area dot com:
“We could,” Kerr said Monday night, after a 109-104 win at Minnesota. “The rest would probably be more of a mental rest, because his legs are good.”
It’s interesting to hear Steve Kerr say that Curry’s legs are good after the last two games that he’s had. That doesn’t mean that Kerr is wrong or right, but rather that it is quite fascinating. Maybe the mental rest is exactly the thing that Curry does need, though. He’s gone all-out all year, and it wears on a person.
While the team would love to get the record for single-season wins and further enhance their legacy, that achievement would ring hollow if the Warriors fell short in the playoffs because players, most notably Stephen Curry, were tired and exhausted from the season. They have to be smart.
Rest might be the best idea to get Curry back on track. In fact, finding rest for all of the key rotational players will be Kerr’s biggest battle over the season’s final few weeks. It could mean the difference between winning it all and falling short. Finding the balance will be key.
