That’s not a misprint. That isn’t supposed to say “million.” You’re reading it correctly. According to an article published on Business Insider, the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry, the soon-to-be back-to-back Most Valuable Player, is worth an estimated $14 billion to Under Armour. That is absurd.
The reason for it is Curry’s growing popularity and his exponential shoe sales. According to the article, Under Armour shoe sales in the United States have increased 350 percent year-to-date. That type of incredible return has left some to speculate that it could become “the world’s number two athletic brand” because of Curry.
From Bob Bryan of Business Insider:
If Curry continues his streak, the difference between the market cap value of the company could be approximately $14 billion, with Under Armour being valued at about $14.1 billion under Sole’s base case and $28.2 billion in his bull case.
Under Armour’s business is being driven almost solely by Curry. He’s probably the most popular athlete in the game today, and might even be closing in on Michael Jordan’s overall popularity levels by the time this season is over considering his reign of dominance.
In the sneaker game, it seems like Curry could be the one who closes the gap on Nike by himself. As far as Under Armour is concerned, Curry is enough of a weapon to make that happen. All they need is for him to continue doing what he’s doing.
With Curry being, arguably, the NBA’s most popular player, and with the Golden State Warriors being one of the more popular teams out there right now, it might not be totally inconceiveable to see Under Armour at least challenge Nike in the near future.
If the Warriors and Curry keep this up, then it could turn into something pretty unbelievable. As a marketing mechanism and on-court icon, Curry really might be worth $14 billion to the company. And that’s absurd.
Yeah right lol
Like Jonathan said, he needs to keep up this level of success for several years. And even then, saying his level of popularity could reach MJs is a stretch. MJ revolutionized the game with his amazing dunks, insane ability to score, his 2 3 peats which were almost back to back, and most of all his killer mentality. Curry will be great, but he won’t close in on MJs popularity by the end of the season. It takes time.
Curry is revolutionizing the game with his amazing 3pt shots. I do agree that its still too soon to say he’s comparable to Jordan at the end of his run, but in my opinion he will make it there.
They also played different eras and players today are likely better on average than they were back then so that could be holding Curry back in terms of greater stats. By the same point in Jordan’s career (7th season) he’d been in 7 all star games but only received his first ring in his 7th season. Curry while only having been in 3 all star games won his first ring in his 6th season and is looking like he may get his 2nd in his 7th.
Time will tell.
Nope… don’t think so. This is where I have to agree with Charles Barkley. Eventually, his legs will start to feel heavy especially in the playoffs.
Where guys start to foul him harder. And playing another 100 + games.
Today they really looked tired playing against the Lakers.
Let him do it for another couple of years before stated these outrageous numbers. Actually, he’s having one great year. Let’s see can he do this for 10 straight years. Kobe, MJ and LeBron etc.
