1. Keep Stephen Curry Happy
Curry wanted Mark Jackson to remain head coach. That didn’t happen. Although Steve Kerr is obviously the better coach and it was the right decision, Curry loved Jackson and front office did not listen to him when he was telling the media that he wanted Jackson back.
The Warriors did listen to Curry when he was petitioning against the Klay Thompson-Kevin Love deal, though. But this situation might be the most important for the leading MVP candidate.
Green is Curry’s muscle, best friend on the team, and the two have built dynamic chemistry on the basketball court. By signing Curry to a 4-year/$44 mil contract a few seasons ago, the Warriors have the flexibility to sign Green to a max deal. David Lee will be off the books soon, anyway. That frees up tons of cap space.
Players are rewarded with max contracts nowadays for being 20-point scorers. Not many guys are given that huge contract when they do so well defensively. Green would be one of the first. He might not be worth a max (only a handful of players are), but Green is worth a big contract due to how valuable he to the team. It would be difficult to find someone else that does everything he can.
Plus, Curry’s contract won’t last forever. As the franchise player, he deserves to have at least his favorite teammates there alongside him. If Green is gone, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Curry would be either when his contract is done, but the chance of it increases. #PayDray
